Statement of Purpose:

Our goal was to bring together stakeholders harnessing the power of the collective will to generate action steps that facilitate the evolution and expansion of mental health and substance abuse services to effectively serve young adults in crisis.

The purpose of this symposium was to convene representatives from the major public, private, and not-for-profit agencies, institutions, and organizations that are concerned with the health and welfare of young adults in Colorado to assess the need for services for those who present with serious substance abuse and mental health problems. The objectives of this session included:

  • Identify the major mental health and substance abuse issues and their prevalence in the population of young adults in Colorado with special reference to those who are homeless.
  • Discuss the unique developmental needs of people in this age group and present emerging promising practices to serve them effectively.
  • Identify gaps in treatment and other supportive services.
  • Engage symposium participants to identify those institutions that are best suited to take responsibility to fill the gaps in treatment and services.
  • Create an action plan to address those gaps.
